Large wooden canteen brought home by a New York Civil War veteran NC

Civil War Style Canteen. This is my personal canteen that matches my half-seat saddle. It has basket weave tooling with the letter P in the center. It is Civil War style with a cork top; however, rather than using a tin canteen like the originals, this shell is stainless steel without lead solder. This makes for a long life even with hard use.

Canteen halves were commonly used as plates, frying pans, or shallow bowls by troops on both sides during the war. Damaged or surplus canteens were heated to melt the solder in order to separate the two halves. Our halves are 100% Made in the U.S.A.

The tin shows a nice mellow gray patina over the body, with a couple areas of moderate surface rusting. The canteen measures right at 5.75 inches diameter by 1.75 inches wide.
